COOLING WATER PLANT IN A STEEL MILL – PROJECT IN DUISBURG BEECKERWERTH, GERMANY

At its site in Duisburg Beeckerwerth, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG (tkSE) operates a central cooling water plant to supply cooling water to the steel-producing and finishing production facilities (various galvanizing plants, ladle furnaces, continuous casting lines, rolling mills, etc.).

The production facilities are supplied across two interconnected sites via three main cooling water circuits (A, B and C). The individual water circuits are divided into the treatment stages of purification and cooling. After passing through the relevant purification stages (including scale pit, longitudinal clarifiers and gravel filters), this cooling water is re-cooled via cooling tower systems.

The ongoing modernization and expansion of the production facilities in Beeckerwerth (extension of the WBW 2, modernization of SGA 1, construction of a new ladle furnace) have led to a continuous increase in the demand for cooling water and cooling capacity, accompanied by rising water temperatures, as well as stricter requirements for water quality.

For this reason, the capacity of the various cooling circuits had to be adjusted. To this end, a new cooling tower plant comprising five cooling tower cells was constructed. In addition, 18 new gravel filters, each with a diameter of 5 m, were installed as double-stage filters. Pumping stations to supply the circuits were also erected. Dosing systems for conditioning the cooling water were included in the scope of the project.

The scope of supply comprised the design, the pumps, the cooling towers, the dosing systems and auxiliary units, as well as the switchgear and automation systems. Pipework and cabling were also included in the scope of supply, as were the complete installation and commissioning.
